Tourism Police in Sri Lanka: Overview
1. Purpose:
The Tourism Police division was established to protect both local and international tourists and to enhance their travel experience by ensuring their safety across the island.
2. Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintain law and order in tourist hotspots.
• Assist tourists with complaints such as harassment, overcharging, scams, or theft.
• Provide directions and general travel advice.
• Handle lost and found reports.
• Coordinate with embassies and tour operators in case of emergencies.
3. Locations:
Tourism Police units are stationed in major tourist areas, such as:
• Colombo (Galle Face, Fort, Pettah)
• Galle
• Hikkaduwa
• Bentota
• Mirissa
• Ella
• Kandy
• Sigiriya
• Anuradhapura
• Nuwara Eliya
• Arugam Bay
• Jaffna
4. Uniform & Identification:
Tourism Police officers usually wear uniforms with clear “Tourist Police” badges and speak at least basic English to assist foreign visitors.
